Sciatica

Your sciatic nerve branches from your lower back, through your hips and buttocks, and down each leg. When there is pressure on the sciatic nerve, it causes a condition called sciatica. This is a painful condition that can make walking difficult. Fortunately, our team at Life Chiropractic in Victorville can treat this condition and improve your overall quality of life.

.

The Symptoms of Sciatica

Sciatica causes pain that radiates from your spine to your buttocks, and down the back of your leg. The pain can vary from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation. Some people compare the pain to an electrical shock. It is not uncommon for the pain to worsen when you cough or sneeze. Long periods of sitting can also trigger additional pain. In some cases, sciatica can cause numbness and tingling in the affected area and muscle weakness can occur.

Diagnosing Sciatica

Sciatica can be diagnosed during a physical exam. Your doctor will need to know about your medical history and a bit about your lifestyle. During the physical exam, they will perform muscle and reflex tests that may include the following:

  • Walking on your toes
  • Walking on your heels
  • Rising from a squatting position
  • Lifting your legs one at a time while lying on your back

Additional Testing

If your pain is severe and your condition does not improve, your doctor may order imaging tests:

  • X-ray: An x-ray of the spine can reveal a bone spur that could put pressure on the sciatic nerve.
  • MRI: An MRI can detect herniated discs, which are a common cause of sciatica.
  • CT Scan: This test can provide a good look at the spinal cord and the spinal nerves.
  • EMG: This test can confirm narrowing of the spine, which is a common cause of sciatica.

Treating Sciatica

Immediately after your diagnosis, your doctor may prescribe muscle relaxants and prescription pain medication. However, these options are only short-term solutions to the problem. If you are looking for a long-term solution, you should see a chiropractor. Our chiropractors can use spinal manipulation to put a herniated disc back into place and remove pressure from the sciatic nerve. Chiropractic care can relieve your sciatica without having to rely on pain medication or invasive procedures.
